6 Reasons Why Writers Should be on Instagram

I’ve heard some people say things like “Why do I have to be on Instagram, if I am a writer?” or “I don’t take pictures. I write. So why should I join Instagram if I have nothing to share there.”

In response, I don’t really believe that any artist (whether that be a writer, musician, or a photographer) is only good at one art. I’ve known many artists who dive into other artistic pools. And there is a lot of good in that.

I first joined Instagram, in 2010 when it started. I didn’t really know what I was going to do with it. I wondered how a writer could use it to their best advantage, because I am one of those writers that love to dive into multiple creative pools.

Instagram, Devin Berglund, Australia, TreesHave you found yourself wondering if you should be on Instagram? Or are you on Instagram, but you really don’t know what it’s going to do for you and your brand? If so, keep reading. (Make sure you read all the way to the bottom for a chance to enter a contest to win some awesome blog/social media stuff.)

  1. Let your audience & potential readers get to know you

This is one of the most important parts. If you are a writer or author wanting to build your platform think about sharing your life through pictures. Whether that be the manuscript you just finished or the shipment of books you are sending to your readers.

This also works for showing a little behind the scenes into the writer behind the words. Show a selfie of you and your family at Disney or of you on vacation. Or maybe a creative shot of something, while shopping. Followers love seeing what your life is like.

Remember to shoot pictures with an appealing composition.

Note on professionalism: Always strive to be professional. Whether that be in your comments or in direct messages. This also stands true for other social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

Your first impression means so much, so don’t let it get ruined.

  1. Get & Give Inspiration

Instagram is a great place to find inspiration. You can also give inspiration to others by posting. What better feeling to help another person out and achieve their goals of reaching their dreams?

As writers, we work with words so much that it is sometimes a good idea to get up and go for a walk. It’s a nice reason to pick up your phone or your camera and take a break capturing inspiration-filled pics, while on your walk. Inspire!

  1. Use & Search Hashtags

Use #’s to find topics you are interested in. You’d be surprised by all the friends you can make via these hashtags. They are just waiting to be met.

A few good writing hashtags:

  • #AmWriting
  • #AmRevising
  • #AmEditing
  • #WritingHarvest (I host a Writing Twitter Chat monthly, so be sure to check it out. It’s a great opportunity to meet fellow writers who become life long friends.)

When you add hashtags to your photos, they are likely to get more comments and likes. It places your pictures into sections with all of the other images that are tagged with the same hashtags. People who are interested in the same hashtags will find your picture and will probably follow you if you seem interesting to them.

  1. Because it’s fun

This one goes without saying. At least, I think so!

  1. Diving deep into another artistic pool will strengthen your writing

As a writer it’s always good to look at life through different artistic glasses. It will help you get better at your art.

  • Do a craft and show people your process on either a collage filled with Instagram pics or in an Instagram video.
  • Do you take dance lessons? Have someone tape you. Then post it.

These also allow your audience (readers) see who you are behind your words.

  1. Think outside of the box.

Always be thinking, “Is this going to push my brand forward?” and “What can I do to bring more engagement to my Instagram.”

Instagram is full of creative options to help build your writing platform into a fun and exciting community.
